Elderly men have been held in high esteem in European culture - at least as long as the patriarchal family dominated European society. Did women never share in the authority engendered by old age? Advice literature indicates that qualities of seniority as wisdom were attributed to both sexes throughout the early modern era. This changed with the development of the modern sexual identities during the Enlightenment and early-Romanticism. In this process the sexes were attributed different, but complementary natures. Then the qualities of seniority were reserved for men, and mature women remained ‘just women’.
