Pubers worstelen met lockdown

Pers / media: Expert CommentAcademic

Description

Primary school children are already going back to school, but in the meantime secondary school students still have no prospects. Many teens have been at home for almost a year, resulting in sadness, anxiety problems and loneliness. Developmental psychologist Bertus Jeronimus of the University of Groningen (RUG) is very concerned about the increasing problems among adolescents. They are limited in every way to acquire skills that are normal, such as having friends, building social relationships,  social skills, education, and experimenting with romantic relationships. Teenagers need to let off steam now and then, but that is hardly possible: 'Young people must be able to rebel and that has now all been taken away from them. In this phase of life they normally spend the least amount of time alone, but now they are forced to go against their nature. Their lives are in fact on hold. In this phase they have to grow up and find their place in society, find the answer to' who am I and what do I want? As a teenager you develop very quickly and you only have a few years to develop your skills, which is why this may cause permanent delays.
