"Labs are responsible for about 2% of global plastic waste", shares Thomas Freese, LEAF coordinator at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (University of Groningen). He calculated that the average amount of CO2 emitted per published paper at the University is 82 tons (an average Dutch person emits 9 tons of CO2 per year). “Of course, as scientists we are at the forefront of solving the climate crisis and our research can make a big impact. We, as scientists, should lead by example and make our research processes more sustainable.” This is where LEAF comes in. Since LEAF was launched at the Faculty in February 2023, a total of 46 labs were accredited: 29 with a bronze and 17 with a silver award.
