Het gebruik van peri-operatieve neurofysiologische monitoring heeft geleid tot een beter begrip van de werkingsmechanismen van, en de interacties tussen, hypnotica en opiaten. Door deze kennis toe te passen in adviserende monitoring schermen, computergestuurde infuuspompen en door het gebruik van nieuwe neuro-fysiologische monitoringsystemen aan het bed van de patiënt kan anesthesie effect nagestreefd worden op een meer reproduceerbare, rationele en op evidentie gebaseerde manier. Het toedienen van anesthetica in individueel aangepaste hoeveelheden ("net-genoeg-om-het-doel-te-bereiken") is de enige zinvolle manier om de korte en lange termein resultaten van anesthesie te beïnvloeden. Hoe meer controle op de titratie, hoe voorspelbaarder het effect zal zijn!
