Marian Counihan completed her PhD in philosophy at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Michiel van Lambalgen and Martin Stokhof. Her PhD, entitled “Looking for logic in all the wrong place: an investigation of language, literacy and logic in reasoning”, has since been widely cited and used in masters level courses. During her PhD she also worked as a lecturer at University College Utrecht.
Marian held a postdoc position at the University of Amsterdam from 2009-2010. Between 2010 and 2013, Marian was primarily active in social reproduction, and ran a social enterprise representing Southern African design brands in the EU.
Since 2013, she has worked part-time at the University of Groningen, first at the department of Psychology, and since 2014 as a lecturer at University College Groningen. In this role she has been responsible for curriculum development and has developed various interdisciplinary courses and workshops at various levels and for various contexts across the university (bachelor, PhD students, academic staff), as well as with Minerva Fine Art Academy.
Between 2016 and 2022 Marian also worked as a policy consultant. She co-developed internationalisation and diversity policy and programming for the municipality of Groningen, successfully applied and co-led network projects at the national and European level, and ran a centre for internationalisation funded by the Accord of Groningen. Please see details of her work here.
As of 2023 Marian has returned to academia full-time. She is co-editor and author of the recent volume Cities for Talent (2022), and a founding editor of the Philosophy of the City Journal. Her research interests are located in philosophy of the city and social epistemology, broadly speaking. She currently teaches courses on o.a. bias, philosophy of science, and the city.
Marian has chaired the board of examiners at UCG since 2018. Additional roles outside the university: advisory board for Noorderzon &Society, supervisory board of OOST.
