Ryan Mitchell Wittingslow received his PhD from the University of Sydney in 2014. In his thesis, he demonstrated that concepts drawn from analytic philosophy of art can be used to address certain epistemic and existential problems posed by post-Heideggerian phenomenology. This project was funded by an Australian Postgraduate Award.

From 2012 to 2016, Wittingslow worked as a journalist and editor: first for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and then for the University of Sydney working with students from First Nations and refugee backgrounds. In 2016 he returned to academia, and moved to Groningen to take up a position as an assistant professor (UD) of philosophy.

Wittingslow was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in 2022, and from 2022 to 2024 was a Humboldt Research Fellow at TU Darmstadt. In 2023 he was promoted to associate professor (UHD) of philosophy. He is the author of the monograph What Art Does (Rowman & Littlefield 2023) and the editor-in-chief of the Philosophy of the City Journal

Most of Wittingslow's research and teaching sits at the fertile delta connecting aesthetics, philosophy of design, philosophy of technology, and political philosophy. He also has devastating opinions about art. His full academic CV, including a list of publications, can be found here.
