Samenvatting

Emphysema is a destructive process of the lung parenchyma characterized by the permanent enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles. Emphysema causes an increase in airflow resistance and pulmonary compliance. The expiratory flow limitation prolongs expiration, and this may also lead to pulmonary hyperinflation. The gold standard approach necessitates a multidisciplinary team so that patients receive comprehensive treatment from rehabilitation through a lung volume reduction intervention that is appropriate for the patient. Lung volume reduction coil (LVRCLVRC) is an implantable device for the endoscopic treatment of emphysema. LVRCLVRC treatment is a therapy, independent of collateral flow, for patients with both heterogeneous as well as homogeneous emphysema. The efficacy results have shown promising improvements in pulmonary function, exercise capacity and quality of life. LVRC has a good safety profile and has no significant long term adverse events related to the procedure or the device.
