Climate change is significantly threatening the global development gains of recent decades, highlighting the manifold links between climate change adaptation and development. On the one hand, climate change increases the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, catastrophic wildfires, desertification, and sea-level rise. On the other hand, decisive adaptive actions on a large-scale will be required to avoid - or at least buffer - the negative effects of climate change on human societies that cannot be avoided anymore, for example mass migration, political instability and conflicts, food-supply and value-chain disruptions, infectious disease outbreaks and other health impacts, and biodiversity loss.
