Samenvatting
Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPS) are vulnerable to crisis. A Joint Crisis Plan (JCP) can help prevent crises, but to draw up a helpful JCP, insight into the early signs of a crisis is needed. This is often lacking. By using the experience sampling method (ESM) technique during an unstable period, personalized and reliable information about variables that are important in the development of crisis is collected, which can serve as basis for the JCP. In this pilot study the authors investigated the feasibility and usability of this methodology. It turns out that it is possible to have patients with BPS fill out an online questionnaire three times a day during a period of (impending) crisis. The visual feedback of the ESM data to the patient can open up new and useful insights into the underlying risk factors for crisis. Broader application of the method should be further investigated.
