Samenvatting

Deep HI imaging with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in the direction of Abell 2218 has resulted in the first detection of HI 21 cm emission at cosmological distance. The HI signal originates in a galaxy at a projected distance of 1.5 h(100)(-1) Mpc from the cluster core and is probably in the process of being accreted onto the cluster. The detection of this galaxy demonstrates that HI 21 cm emission line surveys at cosmological distances are feasible with present-day radio telescopes.
