Samenvatting
Festivals create communities. Today we might associate them with subaltern groups or alternative lifestyles, but in the ancient world they were the main channels of social and political integration, and interurban diplomacy. Through their networks of cities, festivals transmitted like-mindedness across the Mediterranean and beyond. Cities typically had special places reserved in their topographies for these transregional events, ritual spaces that were shaped to foster this cooperative and cosmopolitan mentality.
