This thesis focuses upon aspects of political ideology at the courts of Burgundian and Burgundian-Habsburg rulers between 1450 and 1555. Around 1450 the theory of the divine, hierarchical order of society had lost supremacy both in ideological sense and in political practice. In this thesis political treatises, mirrors-for-princes, educational treatises, orations, dialogues and letters which the Burgundian and Burgundian-Habsburg rulers possessed, or that were translated or written on behalf of them, outline the divergencies between rulers with regard to their political ideology and the treatment of the theory of the divine, hierarchical order of society. The reason for paying atterntion to art-historical material and historical circumstances between 1450 and 1555 is that these, along with the already mentioned written source material, offer insight into this political ideology in the most complete sense. ...
