Samenvatting

This thesis focuses on clinical dilemmas, which the clinician faces in the management of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) with a specific emphasis on the role of current and new diagnostic imaging. Thyroid cancer is a rare disease, but it is the most common endocrine malignancy of an endocrine organ. Approximately 300 new cases are diagnosed in the Netherlands yearly. Thyroid epithelial tumors can be derived from follicular cells, represent differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), and para-follicular C-cells, represent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Undifferentiated epithelial tumors are classified as anaplastic thyroid carcinoma.
