Psychological aspects play a role within medical practice, an assumption that was first described by George Engel in 1978. He noticed that although medical knowledge was advancing, patient satisfaction lacked behind. Engel assumed that increased psychological attention would improve patient care.
In the field of rehabilitation, patients often face adversity due to illness, accidents or birth defects. Acceptance and adaptation to adversity are required to counter the handicap it may cause in order to live an everyday life of satisfactory quality. Quality of life is a measure of a person’s (dis)satisfaction with life and is divided into several domains.
This thesis will examine the influence of psychological factors on rehabilitation patients.
To study to what extent the quality of life of rehabilitation patients was impacted, domains were investigated. The research shows that the psychological, physiological and social domains were affected within this group. Subsequently, the influences of psychological aspects on the quality of life of rehabilitation patients have been studied. Quality of life was used as an outcome measurement. Pain, anxiety, and depression have proven to negatively impact the quality of life, while social support and resilience show a positive impact.
In practice, psychological assessment results in additional diagnostical information, enabling new tools for the treatment of rehabilitation patients that are complementary to the conventional medical approach.
Conclusion: Besides medical aspects, psychological aspects have an impact on the quality of life of rehabilitation patients.
