This review deals with the peripheral sympathetic mechanisms involved in the regulation of energy substrate homeostasis during exercise. We have developed an experimental model for assessing sympathetic influences on metabolic processes in the awake and exercising rat. The data in this survey particularly focus on the exercise-induced alterations of the plasma concentrations of the catecholamines, adrenaline (A) and noradrenaline (NA), on the differences between adrenal A and neuronal NA, and on the role of pre-and postsynaptic adrenoceptors in the regulation of energy metabolism during exercise.
