    Samenvatting

Using Niklas Luhmann's observations on the functioning of media, this essay aims to show by analyzing the critics's self-image, their relations with authorities and theatre management, performers, and audiences that music criticism is not necessarily a reliable source about historic events – although using it thus is sometimes unavoidable –, but first and foremost about itself.
