Samenvatting

This paper studies the impact ofadaycarereformonchildren'smentalandphysicalhealthdevel-opmentinSweden.Thereformeffectivelyreduceddaycarefeesbyasignificantamountandwentalongwithanexpansionofsupply.Wedrawonauniquesetofcomprehensiveindividual-levelhealthcareregisterdataovertheperiod1999-2008.Byexploitingvariationinreformexposurebybirthcohort,weestimateshortandmedium-runeffectsonchildhealthatdifferentages.Wefindasignificantreductioninmentaldisordersinthemedium-runforchildrenaffectedbythereform.Thereformleadstostrongandimmediateincreasesinprobabilitiesofdiagnosiswithphysicalhealthconditionsthatfadeoutaschildrengetolder.Sub-sampleanalysesindicatethatthere-formeffectsarestronglyassociatedwithchildrenfromdisadvantagedbackgrounds.Ananalysisofhealthcareutilizationshowsthataffectedchildrenhavemoreoverallmedicalvisitsatyoungeragesbutfewersickness-relatedvis its in primary school than non-affected children.
