    Samenvatting

While originally not a core business of the European Union (EU), the development of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) has led arms control to become a key policy in the Union's foreign policy toolbox. The policies of the EU cover three broad areas: weapons of mass destruction (WMD), conventional weapons, and security and sustainability in outer space. This chapter assesses the role the European Union can and does play in international arms control by analysing the competences and policies of the EU in this area. It is established that, while the is occasionally a leader in this area, a comprehensive arms control policy is still in its early stages
