The (other) Anglophone problem: The ‘peripheries within the periphery’ in African journalism studies

African journalism studies—either as area studies or sub-field—aims to provide an alternative, Majority-World perspectives to global debates of journalism studies. This paper discusses the core debates in African journalism studies and then highlights the major challenges that have to do with how researchers within this area position themselves to not only employ Minority-World theoretical approaches and methodologies but provide alternatives from an ‘African vantage point’. It argues that the subfield's focus on the “de-westernisation” debate lends it the burden of being part of a global problem yet doing little to address its greatest challenge – the limited global visibility of journalism research by African scholars. Further, it addresses the challenge of ‘peripheries within the periphery’ of knowledge production through the dominance of Anglophone nations over the Francophone or Lusophone ones in Sub-Saharan Africa.
